[discussion] Burando and Indie - pros and cons [part 2 of 2]

Continuing from this post... I will be discussing my thoughts on the current state of buying brand and indie and off-brand and handmade, this time in regards to accessories, jewelry, purses and the like. Again, all my opinion, I am no expert, I've only been in the fashion for a long time and thus have developed a lot of opinions. Feel free to disregard as you will, I will not be offended!

  1. Hair accessories - I feel any and all types of headgear are appropriate, depending on the look you are going for. The important things to keep in mind are: matching with the overall style of the coord and matching with the size and elaborateness of your hair. I personally use brand, indie, off-brand and handmade, and I feel that my friends utilize everything they own to great effect. Obviously matching headgear that is sold with a brand's print or cut would be the ideal purchase, but even for off-brands or dresses/skirts without matching headgear, you can get off-brand headbands, bows, hair flowers and hairpins or barrettes to complete the look. Not to mention, hats are a great addition for many styles and don't have to be brand at all, such as sailor hats or berets for sailor or classic lolita, straw boaters or soft bonnets for country lolita, top hats or tricorns for ouji, crowns and tiaras for hime lolita. I've even seen cloches used by Victorian Maiden models. The latest fad seem to be veils, which can be handmade. There is no limit to the creativity I've seen regarding hair accessories. The only time I've seen hair accessories done badly is basically people not styling their hair to complement and show off the accessory enough, to be honest, and that really takes time and experience and cannot be simply explained by any one person. (Though I will try.) So no worries here.
  2. Jewelry - I'm not 100% sold on buying brand or indie brand jewelry, I only have a few Angelic Pretty pieces, and I'm the type of person to overload on rings and necklaces always. Since my wigs generally cover my ears up, simple studs or themed post earrings are enough for me. Same thing with bracelets, they tend to get covered up or get in the way, so I avoid bangles or cuffs. I guess if I were more into sweet styles, I'd have reason to buy candy or toy themed acrylic brand jewelry, but since I prefer classic or gothic or military, I usually wear off brand pearls, a rosary, some gold or silver (often antique gold or silver) pendants, maybe a rosette or corsage or other brooch, and lots of off-brand or handmade rings. Common jewelry motifs I own are rosaries, birds, Eiffel Towers, deer, skulls, chocolates, Alice in Wonderland themes, and of course flowers and bows. I also buy a lot of pendants from etsy shops, so I can usually make something for a finishing touch on a coord.  I always wear a simple silver wristwatch for convenience, but I do wish for something more elegant sometimes, like a watch necklace or pocketwatch. Someday!
  3. Purses - also not 100% sold on buying brand purses, however, I love them very much and envy everyone who owns brand purses. I have 2 Innocent World purses, plus some Chinese purchases (a biscuit bag, a clock bag, 2 book bags) that I use. The rest are stuff I bought at Ross or whatever, and as long as they hold my stuff, I'm fine with them. I feel that purses are super hard to match, so if I'm a little off, I don't really care that much and so don't wear them in photos if I can help it lmao.
  4. Umbrellas, gloves, scarves, rainboots, etc - again, if you live in a climate that necessitates wearing these items often, then go for brand to match your wardrobe! Otherwise, I find  some pretty off-brand stuff and use that. My favorite purchases so far are a pink ruffly little girls parasol from Target and these fingerless gloves you can get at Forever 21 or Claire's for cheap, great for winter coords while still showing off your rings and using your phone. I do have a Swimmer leopard fur hoodie/scarf combo, but... never got the chance to wear it because I don't want the fur to get dirty. That's the problem with fake fur.

Ok, that's all I've got for you. I hope you got something useful out of this, and please feel free to comment if you think I've got something wrong, too. We learn something new every day!
